Are you searching for The Fat Duck MICHELIN restaurant? Welcome to the other The Fat Duck, a local gastropub in Te Anau, New Zealand.

Finally. New Zealand’s food scene has been thrust into the spotlight. The MICHELIN Guide has landed in little ol’ Aotearoa, and over a dozen very deserving restaurants have earned those coveted MICHELIN Stars in the inaugural New Zealand Guide.

You know what this means, right? New Zealand, the country that is so often missing from the actual map, is now on the culinary map.

Naturally, this has created quite a problem for us here at The Fat Duck in Te Anau, New Zealand. You see, we’re The Fat Duck, but not that The Fat Duck: The UK restaurant with innovative British cuisine and a fixed-price menu, boasting not one, not two, but three MICHELIN Stars.

So, when people start searching for The Fat Duck New Zealand MICHELIN, expecting molecular gastronomy, they find us: the award-winning gastropub delivering hearty food and genuine southern hospitality in Te Anau. We’re not mad about it.

We Share a Name with a Three-MICHELIN-Star Restaurant

Somewhere in Bray, England, the chefs at the three-MICHELIN-starred restaurant are researching, testing, and developing their multi-sensory dishes in their food laboratory and experimental kitchen. We share a name, but we don’t have a food laboratory.

While The Fat Duck in the UK is busy redefining modern gastronomy, we’re hard at work redefining the perfect post-adventure meal in Te Anau. After all, after a day exploring Fiordland National Park and cruising around Milford Sound, most people don’t want to wait months to book in for a bite to eat. They’re looking for a satisfying meal, a cold drink, and friendly service on the day!

… and maybe dessert, because they’ve earned it.

What You’ll Find at The Fat Duck Te Anau

We’re not trying to reinvent dining. We’re just trying to provide a great food experience every day for locals and travellers alike. That means:

  • Beautifully presented and hearty meals
  • Local beers and New Zealand wines
  • Friendly, down-to-earth service
  • A warm and welcoming environment to unwind after being out and about exploring Fiordland

What Does the MICHELIN Guide Mean for New Zealand?

The launch of the MICHELIN Guide New Zealand is a big win for our hospitality industry. It highlights the unbelievable skill, passion, dedication, and creativity of restaurants and chefs across the country – from our fine-dining establishments to the local favourites we all know and love.

Most importantly, it gets Kiwis out and about! While you might stick to cafes, restaurants, and other eateries in your local area, the arrival of the MICHELIN Guide New Zealand has served as encouragement for foodies to travel, taste, and discover each region’s unique offerings.

…and what is the MICHELIN Guide?

There’s all this talk about the MICHELIN Guide in NZ, at long last. Yet, not everyone knows exactly what the MICHELIN Guide is. It’s a global restaurant and hotel reference published by the French tyre company MICHELIN in 1900.

While it seems unusual for a tyre company to be interested in food, it wasn’t just about food. It was to encourage people to travel. The further people go in search of the most exquisite restaurants and hotels, the more tyres they wear and need to buy.

Now, the MICHELIN guide is considered the ‘industry standard’ for culinary excellence. Every year, anonymous MICHELIN inspectors visit top-tier dining establishments in 140 countries and judge the food in front of them.

Restaurants are evaluated every year, and previously awarded restaurants are constantly reassessed for culinary consistency.

  • One MICHELIN star: High-quality cooking, worth a stop.
  • Two MICHELIN stars: Excellent cooking, worth a detour.
  • Three MICHELIN stars: Exceptional cuisine, worth a special journey.
  • Bib Gourmand: High-quality food at reasonable, moderate prices.
  • MICHELIN Selected: High standard of culinary craft, placing the restaurant on the radar for potential stars in the future.

Why Do People End Up at The Fat Duck? … The One in Te Anau, NZ…

Our diners aren’t joining us after seeing us mentioned in NZ’s MICHELIN Guide. They’re joining us for a multitude of other reasons.

First of all, we’re lucky to be based in one of the most beautiful parts of the country. Our diners come from all over the world, with many just passing through on the South Island leg of their journey, looking for somewhere warm and inviting to relax and refuel.

Others are fresh off a Milford Sound cruise, or have just completed the final stretch of the Kepler Track. Then there are those planning the next part of their travel, looking for a ‘proper’ hearty meal or a simple snack while they brainstorm. We’re also a favourite among locals who regularly join us for the food they know and love.

We’re happy to accommodate all of the above.
